Earl Grey is the world's most famous and popular flavored tea. Its delicate, fresh citrus flavor comes from the aroma or oil of bergamot. Two different stories are told about its origin. One tells of an English diplomat who saved a mandarin's life in China. Out of gratitude, the Chinese man gave the Englishman the recipe for a flavored tea – for the then Prime Minister, Edward Earl of Grey. According to the second story, around 1830, the English Prime Minister ordered a shipload of the finest Chinese tea. Also on board was precious bergamot oil. When the ship encountered a storm, the barrels of bergamot oil broke, and the Earl's tea absorbed the aroma. The captain delivered the seemingly spoiled cargo to the Prime Minister anyway. The Earl tasted the tea, was delighted, and gave it his name: Earl Grey!
